Version 2.4.0 is out. And it's big one!

🔌 Disconnecting doesn't end your game anymore

Until now, if your internet dropped for a second, you accidentally closed the tab, or you switched to another app on your phone for a bit too long, you were out. Your points were gone and your friends had to finish the game without you.

That's fixed! We tested this on Deutsche Bahn and it held up. 🚂

Some details:

• If you closed the tab or the app, the main menu shows you a button to get back into your running game.
• If your connection dies while you're writing a caption, or you join last 10 seconds, you don't get the "no-meme penalty" anymore.
• Players who are currently disconnected get a little 💤 badge, so the rest of the lobby knows what's going on.
• The chat tells you when the game is waiting for someone to come back, and when it gave up and moved on.

🌙 Dark mode

Open the settings (the gear icon at the bottom right), go to "Look and Feel" and flip the switch. There's also a fullscreen toggle in there now. And since we were already at it, the top bar with the shop, studio and your profile got a redesign.

👑 Lobby leaders can end a game

If you're the leader and the game is stuck or people left, you can now end it from the in-game menu and everyone goes back to the lobby. Games also end on their own when there are too few players left to keep going.

🤖 Android App Release

2.4.0 is the version that's going to Google Play! We'll do a proper post about the iOS and Android apps next week.

📱 Fixes for the mobile apps

• Some of you had issues with confirming your email on a new account or resetting passwords, especially in our mobile apps. We have greatly improved those systems. Sorry for the frustration!
• Sound on iOS stopped working after switching to another app and back.
• Saving memes on Android didn't work.
• Invite links and the QR code sometimes pointed to the wrong place.
• You can now buy a membership in the Android app. Yay!
• The keyboard doesn't pop up on its own anymore when a new meme appears.

🔧 Other stuff

• Premium avatars stopped disappearing after a page reload.
• Your profile stats and badges update without having to reload the page.
• Quick Play tries again with a different lobby if joining fails or an ad got in the way.
• Better translations for German, French, Italian, Turkish and a few more.
• If you want to help translate, there's a link in the language picker.
• Lots of smaller fixes.

⚠️ One more thing

Older versions of the app can't connect to the new servers. If the app asks you to update, update your app. On web, just reload the page.

We challenge you to complete 26 games between now and the 31st of August. If you survive the grind, you will unlock the "Summer Meltdown" achievement and earn the exclusive "Heatwave Survivor '26" badge to show off in your lobbies!

Your progress is tracked automatically while the event runs. Just log in, play, and keep an eye on the counter.

But take note: you can't just buy this badge. You have to work for it, the old-school way!

🛠️ iOS Launch Fixes & Improvements (Made possible thanks to you 🫶)

Thanks to the rigorous reports from our amazing beta testers, the live app includes a huge list of fixes. Here is what you guys caught:

• Signing in with Google and Apple now works seamlessly, no restarting the app anymore.
• Password reset now works properly on iOS, right within the app.
• Switching languages will not yield errors or land you on "Not Found" anymore. We managed to find all of them!
• Our beautiful background music & sounds will now reliably play after you turn off silent mode. We did quiet it down a little though. No jump scares here.
• We stopped the phone keyboard from opening automatically on a new meme, because we figured you'd probably like to actually see it.
• Our loading screens used to be slightly scrollable even though they weren’t even that large. But if you’re bored between rounds you can still tap the pictures of Mimi!
• If you forgot to log in during a game, you can now do so after the final voting to claim your coins. And don’t worry, we’ll bring you right back to your lobby after you’re done – your friends won’t even notice you were gone for a second.
• Lobby invite links have been completely fixed!
• Creating or joining a lobby failed on many occasions during the beta, so we vastly improved stability.
• Memes are not tiny on iPads anymore!
• Fixed a bug where some people were getting ads when joining an Elite lobby or having a Premium plan.
• ... and much more behind the scenes!

💬 Why chat is sign-in only

We liked anonymous chat too, but spam, insults, harassment, and ban circumvention are hard to fight if bad actors just keep coming back all the time. That's unfair to you and to our mod team. Making people use an account makes it easier for us to stop people breaking the platform rules and hurting everyone's experience. Safety comes first, and the app stores have rules we need to meet for our upcoming mobile release. Making an account is free and only takes a few seconds. 🙏

💬 A note on coins and keeping MiM free

We know in-game currencies can raise eyebrows, so here's where we stand.

Make it Meme has been free for 5 years. We want to keep it that way. But keeping a game alive on ads alone is a real challenge, and if you've watched other games try to solve this problem, you know how badly it can go. Some go from free to aggressive paywalls overnight and alienate the communities that built them. We don't want to be that game.

That's why coins were in a quiet beta for 2 months before this launch. We collected real feedback from real players, and it changed what we shipped. The biggest example: based on your feedback, we brought back the meme changes setting instead of replacing it with coin-based changes.

We're a team of five people making a silly meme game, and we take your trust seriously. If anything ever feels off, just tell us on Discord or wherever. We're listening, and we'll keep listening.

A lot has happened since our last news post! We've been super busy working on new features and content, and honestly just forgot to write an update. Sorry about that! 😅

Let's catch you up on everything that's new.

🎨 Mix Multiple Meme Packs!

The biggest new feature: You can now mix and play with multiple meme packs at the same time!

Instead of picking just one pack, you can now select multiple packs and get memes from all of them combined during gameplay. This is a game changer for smaller meme packs (around 30 templates) since they feel way less repetitive when mixed with others.

This also makes creating your own custom packs more fun! You're no longer forced to build massive collections just to make them playable. Create a small themed pack and mix it with an official one to see your templates get shuffled in—it's super fun!

Free users can select up to 2 meme packs at a time, while paid members can select up to 10 packs for maximum variety.

🆕 New Content

We've been busy adding tons of new stuff:

• 5 New Avatars: Skibidi Toilet, Trallalero Trallala, Tung Tung Sahur, Ballerina Cappucina, and Barry B Benson!
• Limited Time Halloween Avatars that were available until Halloween

We're continuing to improve our chat filter to make it less annoying while keeping everyone safe. Your feedback has been incredibly helpful, so huge thanks to everyone who reached out via Discord or email! Keep it coming.

🎮 Game Improvements

Lots of quality of life updates:

• More sound effects throughout the game, including voting feedback
• Enhanced notifications for logged-in users (friend requests, game invites, etc.)
• Meme Studio improvements: Better loading times, improved template and pack searching, smoother editor UI
• Tons of bug fixes and small improvements across the board

🔐 Public Chat Now Requires an Account

Starting today, you'll need to be signed in to chat in Public Lobbies. We know some of you won't like this change, but here's why we're doing it.

Dealing with spam and toxic behavior without accounts has been challenging. Troublemakers keep coming back anonymously, making it hard to enforce our community guidelines effectively. Requiring accounts for public chat lets us actually address these issues and create a safer environment for everyone.

The good news: Signing up is completely free, takes 2 minutes, and unlocks features like adding friends, stats, achievements, saving memes, and more. Private Lobbies work exactly as before.

• 👥 Lobby Player List: You can now view all players currently in your lobby directly from the in-game menu. This makes it easy to add friends, report players and manage your lobby
• 🌍 13 New Lobby Languages: Bengali, Bosnian, Persian, Malay, Punjabi, Slovenian, Albanian, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, Filipino, Urdu, and Vietnamese
• 🚩 Report Meme Button: Report problematic memes directly during gameplay

🎉 Private Chat is Back!

Great news everyone: Private Lobby chat is officially back online! We know the current chat filter situation was super frustrating and not fun anymore, blocking almost everything you tried to write. We heard you loud and clear.

We built our own filter system from scratch, made just for Make it Meme. The old one is gone, so things should be way better now. We want the game to be fun and safe, while still letting you chat and joke around normally.

This is version 1 of our new system and we're tweaking it daily. If something gets blocked that shouldn't (or doesn't get blocked but should), let us know! Use the in-game feedback, email us at [email protected], or hit us up on Discord.

🚨 Nicknames Getting Blocked for No Reason?

We know many of you have been frustrated with our content filter being overly aggressive lately, blocking harmless nicknames and account names for no apparent reason. We hear you, and know that can be annoying.

We've rolled out a fix this morning that should resolve most of these issues. Harmless nicknames should no longer get blocked by our filter system.

💬 Private Lobby Chat Temporarily Disabled

While we continue working on improving our content filtering system, we've made the tough decision to temporarily disable chat in Private Lobbies. Don't worry though, you can still play and create memes as usual! Public lobbies continue to work normally with chat enabled.

We know this isn't ideal, but as a small team, we're working hard to get these improvements rolled out as quickly as possible. We want to make Make it Meme the best experience it can be for everyone.

After years of faithful service, we're saying goodbye to Pepe and welcoming our adorable new mascot - the MiM Cat! You'll see this cute feline in our new game icon, banner, and throughout the game. Don't worry, Pepe's legacy lives on in our hearts (and in countless memes).

🏆 Achievement System Overhaul

We heard you loud and clear - our achievements were harder to get than a perfect game of Dark Souls. So we've completely rebalanced the entire achievement system!

What Changed:

• All achievements now have exactly 3 levels (no more, no less)
• Requirements have been dramatically reduced to make them actually achievable by humans
• Heads up: When you first play after the update, you'll likely unlock multiple achievements at once as your existing stats are checked against the new requirements. Enjoy the dopamine rush!

• Level 1: 10,000 → 5,000 points
• Level 2: 100,000 → 50,000 points
• Level 3: 500,000 → 500,000 points
• Level 4: 1,000,000 (removed)

• Level 2: 50 memes created (unchanged)
• Level 3: 250 → 200 memes created
• Level 4: 1,000 (removed)

Funny Bone 😂

• Level 1: 50 upvotes received (unchanged)
• Level 2: 300 → 100 upvotes received
• Level 3: 1,000 → 200 upvotes received

• Level 1: 100 memes rated (unchanged)

• We're aware that message authors can't currently see when their messages are blocked - we're working on fixing this
• We are working hard on bringing back the chat to Poki soon
